Sekolah Sukan Tengku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI) emerged Champions of the 2012 Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) Premier 7s Rugby Tournament with an impressive performance beating Sekolah Menengah Sultan Yahya Petra 1 (SMSYP1) of Kelantan 38-10 in the Cup category to secure the N.J. Ryan Trophy for the second time in succession. In a repeat of last year’s final of the Cup Category, SMSYP fought bravely in the first half before succumbing to the power of SSTMI.
Host, the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) showed great improvement to qualify for the Cup Semifinals before being defeated by SMSYP1 7-12 in sudden death extra time when the score was tied at 7 all at the end of regulation time. In the other Cup Semifinal, SSTMI beat SMKA Sheikh Hj Othman Abdul Wahab (SHOAW) 19-17.
For the Plate Category, Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor (SEMASHUR) narrowly triumph over Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) of Ipoh 19-17. Thailand’s Vajiravudh College defeated Sekolah Sains Sultan Mahmud (SESMA) Kuala Trengganu 24-12 in the Bowl competition while Sekolah Menengah Vokasional Arau (SMVA) scored a last minute winner against Kolej Yayasan Saad (KYS) of Melaka.
Prizes were given out to the winners by Datin Josephine Ryan, widow of the late Dato’ N.J. Ryan, who came over from Australia to specifically for the occasion.
The MCKK Premier 7s Rugby Tournament is an annual invitational school rugby tournament featuring the champion school team from all states in Malaysia as well as established rugby playing schools in both Malaysia and Thailand.The tournament is jointly organised by MCKK and its alumni, The Malay College Old Boys Association (MCOBA), to promote the development of sports in Malaysia, in particular rugby.
The Premier Sponsors for this second edition of the Tournament are The Government of Malaysia and Telekom Malaysia (TM) while the Major Sponsors are UEM, SCOMI Group Berhad, MTU Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd, AirAsia, Ernst & Young, Hopetech Sdn Bhd, Bousted Sissons Paints Sdn Bhd, Delima Oil Products Sdn Bhd and Karangkraf.
